What are dental implants?

Dental Implants are an artificial tooth root that is placed into your jaw bone to hold a replacement tooth or bridge. People usually use these  as an alternative if they have lost a teeth due to periodontal disease, an injury, or for any other reason. They are favoured over the usual solution of dentures, as they  can have a tendency to slip while you’re eating, talking or even laughing. Dental Implants are a permanent fixed solution.

Why people are opting for dental implants

Dental implants offer many benefits, including:

  • Appearance – They look and feel like your own teeth, and because they are designed to fuse with bone, they become permanent.
  • Speech – If your dentures are poorly fitted, they can slip, causing you to mumble. Dental implants allow you to speak without the concern that your teeth will slip out of your mouth?
  • Comfort – Designed to fuse with bone , implants eliminate the discomfort of removable dentures.
  • Easier chewing – Sliding dentures can make chewing difficult. With dental implants, you can enjoy your favourite food without any discomfort or pain.
  • Better oral health – Implants don’t require the removal of other teeth, like a tooth-supported bridge does. Because nearby teeth are not altered to support the implant, more of your own teeth are left intact, improving long-term oral health. Individual implants also allow easier access between teeth, improving oral hygiene.
  • Strong – Implants are very durable and will last many years. With good care, they can last a lifetime.
  • Convenience – Removable dentures are just that; removable. Dental implants eliminate the embarrassing inconvenience of removing dentures, as well as the need for messy adhesives to keep them in place.

Dental implant procedure

The tooth root implant, which is a small post made of titanium, is placed into the bone socket of the missing tooth. As the jawbone heals, it grows around the implanted metal post, anchoring it securely into the jaw.

Once the implant has bonded to the jawbone, a small connector post — called an abutment — is attached to the post to secure the new tooth. Your dental implant surgeon will make impressions of your current teeth and create a model of your bite. The new teeth are created, based on this model, and will match the colour of your natural teeth. A replacement tooth, called a crown, is then attached to the abutment.

Alternative procedures

  • Sinus lift

If the vertical bone height is unable to support the dental implants, you may undergo a sinus lift or bone graft. Sinus lift surgery adds bone to your upper jaw in the area of your molars and premolars..

  • Zygoma implants

Zygomatic implants are used in the upper jaw when there is insufficient bone for ordinary implants. They provide additional support for patients  who may have suffered a substantial amount of bone loss.
